The municipality of Chisinau was represented in the first global meeting of the European Union Program “Partnerships for Sustainable Cities”, held in Brussels, Belgium. Thus, between March 7-9, 2023, a delegation of the Chisinau City Hall, led by the vice-mayors of the capital Olga Ursu and Ilie Ceban, together with Octavian Lungu, the manager of the EU project “MOVE IT like Lublin”, participated in the event.
During the proceedings of the first meeting of the Coordination Committee of the EU Program “Partnerships for Sustainable Cities”, the representatives of the Chisinau municipality had the opportunity to share their experiences with the representatives of other cities, through the exchange of experience and the adoption of good practices.
In this context, the Chisinau City Hall presented the initiative for the sustainable development of public transport in the city of Chisinau, carried out within the European Union (EU) Project “MOVE IT like Lublin”. The main objectives to be achieved through the implementation of the project are: improving public transport policies at the municipal level; development of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan; increasing institutional capacity, in accordance with EU practices in the field; increasing the quality of public transport management in Chisinau and Lublin by implementing innovative solutions and technologies; creation of the Traffic Monitoring Center, etc.
Also, in the organized thematic workshops, the participants addressed the specific problems of the sustainable development of cities. The workshops included topics related to territorial planning, waste management, water quality, entrepreneurship promotion, citizen participation, as well as the circular economy.
A special theme in the event represented the challenges and opportunities in the sustainable development of cities, in order to improve urban infrastructure, to reduce carbon emissions to improve people’s quality of life.
It should be noted that the Partnership for Sustainable Cities is an initiative launched by the European Commission in 2018, in order to encourage cities around the world to collaborate and develop sustainable solutions for urban challenges. The initiative aims to improve the quality of life in cities, promote sustainable development and increase economic competitiveness.
