From an administrative point of view, Chisinau is divided into five sectors: Botany, Buiucani, Center, Ciocana and Riscani. The local body of state power is the Chisinau Municipal Council and the Chisinau City Hall. The first documentary mention of Chisinau as a locality dates from 1436. The city status was obtained in 1818, and the status of Chisinau municipality – in 1995. Chisinau is located at 47 degrees 2 minutes north latitude, 28 degrees 50 minutes east longitude and at a altitude of 85 m above sea level, in the Eastern European plain.
Situated on a picturesque place, on the edge of the southeastern slope of the Central Moldavian Plateau, on seven hills, it is crossed by the river Bâc, a right tributary of the Dniester. The city produces a pleasant impression on guests and residents. It has wide and bright boulevards, parks and squares flooded with green areas, modern buildings located in the vicinity of buildings with elements of traditional architecture, all presenting the city in a special color.
In Chisinau there is the Ghidighici reservoir with an area of about 8 km2 and 23 smaller lakes. The soil is predominantly black (chernozem). Limestone, sands and chalk are widespread among the minerals. On the territory of Chisinau is the international airport, which can serve over 400 passengers a day, on average there are about 25-30 flights a day. More than 15 airline operators operate flights to 18 countries in Europe and the Middle East.
The railway connection connects Chisinau with Moscow, St. Petersburg, Bucharest, Iasi, Odessa. Through bus transport services, Chisinau is connected with neighboring countries such as: Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Belarus, and with Western European countries (Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Bulgaria, Italy).
At present, Chisinau can certainly be considered a European city. Chisinau won the “Emerging city of the year in SEE” award at one of the most important conferences in the field of Business Process Outsourcing & Shared Service Center: „CEE Business Services Summit and Awards 2020”, held in Warsaw, Poland.
In order to attract investors, a free economic zone, “Expo-Business-Chisinau”, was created in Chisinau, which hosts about 56 residents and attracted investments of over 75 million dollars. 1600 jobs have been created in fields such as: production of wiring for the automotive industry; viticulture; production of chemicals and plastics, furniture, lighting equipment and IT&C.
The brief analysis of the share of Chisinau in the economy of the Republic of Moldova shows us that the economic activity of the country is concentrated in the capital, with an industrial production value of 51.5% of the total for the country, and 66% of the total investment in fixed assets on land, it is provided by the municipality of Chisinau. The number of employees is 60.2 percent.
In these conditions, it can be said that Chisinau is the dominant city of the country where it is concentrated over half of the country’s economy, a quarter of the population, more than half of employees and is an extraordinary launching pad for any investment.
