The first electric scooter rental service was created in Chisinau. The service aims to contribute to the promotion of environmentally friendly alternative transport. It was created with the support of UNDP and the Global Environment Facility.
The new means of transport dedicated to Chisinau residents, as well as visitors, represents an alternative and ecological solution for moving quickly and comfortably over short distances in the city, avoiding traffic jams and discomfort in public transport and, directly, reducing CO2 emissions. More recently, scooters are also a safe transport solution during the pandemic, which allows maintaining physical distance and avoiding congestion in urban transport.
“Current planning and strategic urban development practices increasingly focus on smart mobility and ecological mobility, and alternative urban transport occupies an important place in the development policies of modern urban agglomerations. Thus, Chisinau is also rethinking its transport network to offer people safe, efficient and comfortable travel alternatives, whether by public transport, private transport, by bicycle or on foot. This is all the more necessary now, when we are going through the COVID-19 crisis and we want to rebuild a better and more ecological future”, said Dima Al-Khatib, UNDP resident representative in the Republic of Moldova.
“This service is a good opportunity, but also an alternative for those who want to move around the city with scooters, but do not have the opportunity to buy them, or do not want to do so. I like to ride a scooter around the city, a bicycle, there is still work to be done regarding the creation of the infrastructure for these types of transport, but we are taking small but sure steps in this regard, to create the conditions in the capital. I support all innovative and good ideas like this one”, said Ion Ceban, the General Mayor of the Municipality of Chisinau.
